No, you can't catch diabetes from a friend. Other misconceptions are corrected and the disease generally explained in this simple, informative photo-lesson that shows ten-year-old Karen giving herself an insulin injection, eleven-year-old Danny refusing a cookie offer, seven-year-old Colleen testing her urine for glucose and kctones (and confessing later to the doctor that she'd been faking the results for fear her parents would think she hadn't been following her meal plan), and fourteen-year-old Robert suddenly hit by an insulin reaction while mowing the lawn with friends. All four diabetes patients are also seen playing normally with friends and family, and mild sibling resentments are aired as well. If the conversations are a bit unrealistic for the sake of the lesson, the information is well programmed and nicely balanced, the photos attractively upbeat.
