A formidable hunter herself, Beth chafes at his vigilance, and their emotional tension grows when she realizes they are fated life mates and he hasn’t claimed her, which she interprets to mean the former Scottish laird doesn’t think she’s good enough for him. Before her turning, Beth had been sold into prostitution and had been brutalized by men for most of her human life. Offended by Scotty’s attitude, she is nonetheless drawn to him, but trying to sort through their complicated emotions and sizzling attraction while also defending herself from escalating attacks that threaten everyone around her is difficult. When they take the time to address their fears and misconceptions, Scotty and Beth discover a love for the ages, but they’ll have to survive before they can seek a happy-ever-after. Sands revisits her popular Argeneau series (Immortal Unchained, 2017, etc.) with another suspenseful paranormal romance with an interesting historical twist, an explosive plot, and a lively cast of secondary characters. Beth’s horrific past plays into Scotty’s prejudices due to his own problematic history, and readers will root for Beth’s demand to be loved for who she is or not at all.
