An orphanage mystery set in a Scotland complete with brogues and tartans is by the author of The House in Riding, Wishing Water Gate, etc., which had the same setting. In a Birmingham home young Cathie wonders about her war-obscured background and the only clue to it: some pressed flowers and a picture of a woman in green plaid. Cathie runs away, has her adventures en route, and finally ends up by the sea near Kinlochmore with friendly Aunt Effie and her grown son Alastair. A bit of detecting brings a happy if improbable outcome for Cathie's father is identified as Alastair's second cousin and she's freed from a bleak future. Light reading.
