NOODLEHEAD STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Knuckleheads and numbskulls thrive in every clime. In India there was the harried husband of Balachi, espoused to two possessive wives. When the first wife plucked a hair from his head, the second demanded one for herself. The husband agreed and she was content until the first wife took a second hair. And the other wife took another -- until the poor man was bald. Ireland's Johnny Lynch loved boiled eggs, but his wife refused to cook them for she preferred scrambled. Johnny tried to solve his problem by offering his thirsty laying hens boiling water! India bred the devoted scholars determined to buy a horse for their teacher. They bought a watermelon believing it was a horse-egg. Some of our knuckle heads are animals: some are old favorites -- Tyll Ulenspiegel, and the townspeople of Schilda. Though the quality varies in the tales, there are enough toothy and memorable nuggets interspersed with the mediocre to make this of positive value to children and to adults who draw on such collections. The stories range in length from a couple of pages to medium length. The better stories here are really excellent.
