The Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of New York City discusses his office, determination and manner of deaths of approximately 17,000 people a year. The history and development of the coroner system -- early inquests -- law, etc. A discussion of procedure today, its functions and evils, how it operates, disposal of corpses. ""Morning in the Morgue"" -- examinations, autopsies, chemistry, taxicology. Tie-ups between examiner and police and law courts -- a branch of detection. Accident cases -- firearm cases --asphyxia -- sex crimes -- reconstruction and identification of bodies, and so on. Profusely illustrated with cases. Pretty gory for sensitive readers, but made to order for crime morbids. A straight reporting job and limited in interest.
