A cross section of a typical small town, American, of average people, with average problems, all with a potentially satisfactory solution through money. There is the man who wants to buy freedom from the tart he is involved with; there are two workmen, who with a dying wife, both beaten down by the town's wealthiest man; there is the grocery boy who wants to marry a girl who is an outcast; there is the Italian dentist and his wife who cannot afford to have the child they crave -- and so on. By the close, some have surmounted what seems to be the only hurdle -- others have accepted their fate. And the town's Midas wins the stake on a ticket he took from one of his workmen, the ticket that might have saved a life. Readable, handled with ease and credibility, well done.
