THE HISTORY OF RUSSIA, Vol. II: The Successors of Peter the Great

The second volume in the History of Russia (see p. 441 for the review of Vol. I, From the Beginnings to the Empire of Peter the Great) covers the reigns of the sovereigns from Catherine I to Nicholas I in dutiful detail and maintains the publisher's promise of being ""the most comprehensive history of Russia ever to be published in English."" It is dominated by the figure of Catherine II, the Great, during whose long reign the social and political system for which her predecessors had laid the groundwork was established. Again, an impersonal, dispassionate performance, more for resource than reading.
