THE FIFTH WOMAN

A Crime Club Special, the designation of distinction is deserved and this novel, from the Hungarian, introduces the self-effacingly impressive Inspector Nemetz of the Budapest Homicide division. Now, during the revolution of 1956, the city has become a shooting gallery and a fifth woman's body is added to four casualties littering the streets. The case itself is steadily interesting but the background here, from the city's hospital to Russian headquarters, extends the genre and lends authenticity and authority.
