Johnny Darling is a legendary teller of tall tales of the Catskills, performer of fantastic feats of shrewdness, smart and quick and little and strong. Dr. Jagendorf, collector of the stories, says some of them parallel the tales of Baron Munchausen. Johnny is supposed actually to have lived in the last half of the 19th century, and is presumably still remembered by many of the people who retell his stories. Fine regional and folk hero tales, good material for story tellers, fine tales for reading aloud. They are flexible in form, lending themselves to the gift of the versatile story teller, and their interpreter has given them a crisp phrasing in keeping with their spirit. Excellent Americana- to place beside Paul Bunyan and Rip Van Winkle.
