THIS IS HISTORIC BRITAIN

Sasek begins in London, which he visited before in 1959, and branches out into Britain to visit the tourist sights, mostly cathedrals, quads and castles. In between the little jokes (""Don't get lost in the maze!""), the captions do remind us of each monument's important or curious past; however, it helps to know already what is meant by the ""City of London"" and who, for example, Margaret of Anjou or Mary of Scots' secretary Rizzio were. The paintings exhibit Sasek's familiar miniaturized charm, and--except for Nelson's pillar, much elongated by perspective--are accurate, doll house-like representations. An evocative tour . . . more for daydreamers than students.
