AND SUDDENLY IT'S EVENING

In 1958, at the age of 75, Mrs. Lee wrote Cripple Creek Days, a memoir of her Colorado girlhood. Now she resumes her story in 1922 when widowed, after 16 years as the wife of a mining engineer, and the mother of a young daughter, she had to find a job and went to Colorado College as its Dean of Women. These years saw the upsurge of social freedom and she was liberal in her administrative techniques; she also tried to learn something about the then new psychiatry; but she faced certain strictures in her own life which kept her from making a home for Barbara. She went to Radcliffe briefly in another post- and then resigned, because of Barbara. Finally she was asked to come to the newly established, progressive college, Bennington, as its Director of Admissions, and she tells here of its first years of accomplishment and acceptance.... Mrs. Lee's memory stands up to the years perhaps better than much of what she has to say which is sentimental in interest and tone for today's readers.
