How English/American Karen Kraymer and all-American cousin Drew find out who killed Alison Kraymer three generations back and what happened to her precious necklace. Trailed all the way by the Kellys, uncle and nephew so eager that they knock out a kid on Halloween for his costume, they track down all the elderly witnesses including beautiful Alison's plain Jane sister-in-law Ethel. Karen's show-busy mother thinks her eighteen-year-old is a social dud for spurring Vincent the rising star but Karen will hitch her wagon up to distant cousin Drew, and not as a pauper. Hours before the old Kraymer brownstone in the West Nineties (New York) is to be demolished, Ethel owns up, the younger Kraymers follow up her directions, and those clodhopper Kellys shadow them and take over the treasure. ""You sound like someone in a bad movie,"" says Karen, but the necklace is recovered and codicil Karen is home free. No trick or treat--just stale candied corn.
