Elizabeth Falcon summered with her painter brother, John, on the isle of Skye. The youth hostel which John directed aroused bitter hostility in Colonel Kinloch, a neighbor, and for a time it seemed John's romance with Fiona, his grandaughter, would founder. Two local brothers Charles, glamorous but superficial and Grant, the steady native son loyal to the land, spar for Elizabeth's affection. The youth hostel gains a better name as the group helps in the search for a missing child and John undertakes a rescue mission on the mountains. The characters in their pastoral setting are deeply realized: the conflicts and crises of the plot are not compelling enough to bring this up to the earlier Swiss Holiday but it does project a sensitive heroine in her late teens with more conviction than most.
