SINGING AMONG STRANGERS

Report repeated from p. 116 of the February 15th bulletin, when scheduled for spring publication; ""Mabel Leigh Hunt has written good fiction and non-fiction for both the 8 to 11 and 12 to 16 groups and now her account of a Latvian family, from its pre-war life near Rigs to war forced emigration to Indiana, has all the moments of gaiety, sadness, terror and relief that befall an earnest people. Mimina and Tevs, a Riga engraver, are mother and father to Marga and Astra and aunt and uncle to their family cousins. They have a farm outside the city and the description of their life there is warm and detailed. With the onslaught of the German and Russian armies, there is a clear outline of political feelings, and with the subsequent move to a German factory town, the bereavement typical of a kind of family America was soon to know well- the D.P. For her study the author made friends with just such people, and her wish to convey them just as they are shows in her work.
