Hiram the hired hand refuses to part with his red shirt even when the elbows pop through. ""A little from here, a little for there"" is Hiram's guiding motto as he snips off the cuffs to patch the elbow, the shirttail to make new cuffs, the trousers to make a shirttail, and so forth until the vicious cycle ends with the invasion of the piggy bank and the purchase of a new red shirt. Chain reaction techniques are always appealing to young children, but the complicated snippings and sewings of Hiram may tire them rather than intrigue.
