VALEDICTORY by MacKinlay Kantor

VALEDICTORY

Pub Date: April 24th, 1939

Kantor's name was made through his novel of Gettysburg, Long Remember, and yet, since then, his best selling work has been his novelettes, scarcely more than long short stories. Valedictory belongs in this class. The story reminds one inevitably of Mr. Chips, in the lowly guise of the school janitor on the eve of retirement. Through his meditations, as he prepares for his last commencement, one glimpses the life of the little community as the old janitor's life impinges on those of the children he has come to know so well. Not an important piece of work, but it has a simplicity and a homely emotional quality that is certain to appeal to many readers.
