Ireland, where the past is more real than the present, with that ""little spot of bother"" known as the thrubbles, provides a very genuine overcast to this story of the return of old Marcus Agnew to the village where as a young English officer he had shot the father of Jackie Meenan. Jackie, full of hate, his mind still further enfeebled by drink, is determined to shoot the man who killed his ""Da"" and the suspense here rides on the will he--won't he accomplishment of an old revenge. But the real virtue of the book is in the landscaping of a small, ingrown, tenaciously ""bluddy"" little county such as this.
