This warm-hearted, nostalgic and leisurely idyll of country life in Texas in the early 1900's should appeal to fastidious, sentimental little girls. The slight plot, involving Melinda's visit to her grandparents' farm in Texas, is composed mostly of episodes of country life. Melinda, her cousins and new friends explore a swamp, a deserted house, and Melinda visits a saw mill. There are church sings, suppers, house raisings and square dances -- all part of the popular conception of country life. Through the eyes of the sensitive Melinda, the people and events of Loblolly Farm appear as rather unreal but pleasant elements in a day dream of a cloudless childhood. An atmospheric story with a quiet charm.
