A well-realized portrait of a man who was a legend in his own lifetime, this follows the fate of the child no teacher had understood. His was a life of paradoxes -- exceptional in its successes and failures, in its recognition and persecution. When Einstein's theories had been put to the test and universities vied for his services, he disdained the protection from religious persecution in Germany which his prestige might have afforded him -- chose rather to ally himself with his religious community. The boy who had been a failure in school submitted to President Roosevelt the suggestion which initiated the atomic bomb. His stormy first marriage ended in divorce. A later marriage and his studies and leadership at Princeton brought fulfillment. The story of Einstein is brought within the grasp of children through selected facets of his life. With today's emphasis on science, it is likely to interest youngsters and the tone is non-technical.
