In her fourth volume on needlepoint, Maggie Lane again interprets traditional Chinese designs, tiffs time adapting them to the larger requirements of rugs and hangings. As before, the designs themselves--seven for rugs, five for panels--reflect an artist's care for the interplay of color and form on canvas and a discerning eye for background and border patterns. Although not intended for beginners, the instructions--for basketweave stitching, blocking, binding, lining, etc.--are clear, even emphatic, about the purposes for particular techniques; the refinements of much experimentation, they assure a more polished look in the completed work to compensate for the added effort. Elegant examples of ornamentation accompanied by unusually helpful instructions.
