Historical novel of Tories making the best of their lot, in spite of internal and external troubles, and the rough life. Escaping the punishment due them for being Loyalists, the van Doorns of Albany emigrate in 1874 to wilderness Canada and make a success of living off the soil. Peter's son disappears on their arrival, his wife almost loses her mind, and is kept from complete return to normalcy by her fear of Vulpin who acquires great power by underhanded means. Ann falls in love with Vulpin's younger brother, Glen, but gives him up out of family loyalty, Peter searches through Indian villages for his son; Vulpin is hated and feared by all; famine, wild animals, hard winters take their toll and forge the wilderness settlement by hard measures. Finally Peter finds his son; Vulpin falls from power and the pioneers have the promise of better times with Ann able to marry Glen at last. Able.
