THE WEST POINT ATLAS OF THE CIVIL WAR

Compiled by the Department of Military Art and Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy and containing 242 maps, this excellent and long overdue volume is considerably more than the Civil War Atlas of the title. To provide additional ""background material"" for students of Civil War strategy the editors have included, as well as maps of the Civil War campaigns, maps of earlier campaigns on the American continent: the Colonial Wars of the mid-18th Century, the Revolution, the War of 1912, and the Mexican War. The book is excellently arranged, with a concise and accurate account of the campaign illustrated facing each map, the only criticism being that because of the small print background terrain (not the actual campaigns) is difficult to decipher, requiring the aid of a reading glass. Originally designed for the use of cadets at West Point, this book will appeal to all Civil War buffs and students and belongs in all libraries of the War. It will form an excellent gift book for amateur -- and professional -- military strategists.
