THE YOUNG CONCUBINE

This is an incalculable, but this much is certain, it's no (of jacket) ""romance of Indo-China"". Under a heavy lush blanket of ritual, mysticism, legend, spirits evil and animal, comes the story of Atman, the little Cambodian princess who believed herself destined to carry the burden of the universe, and ""come upon earth to save the spirits"". Very Freudian in the handling of her father's unreciprocated love, of her identification with his ten year old concubine, with her earthly love of her aged uncle and her marriage to him. She worships Buddha and Christ alternately, hoping to unite the Orient and the Occident. But after her marriage, she returns to the jungle, where she is strangled by sorcerers. A bit beyond the Occidental mind, in its implications. Perhaps the Indo-China locale will sell it.
