KIRKUS REVIEW

A certain amount of ancestor worship for this full-length, enthusiastic biography of Wade Hampton of South Carolina, planter, aristocrat, senator, and cavalry- lieutenant under Lee. Retracing his pioneering lineage dating back to the Revolution, the rise of family fortunes in cotton, the family seat at Millbrook, his youth and two marriages and his ante-bellum politics, this deals at greatest length with his military career during the Civil War. After the surrender, he re-entered politics as a war-hero urging ""reconciliation, rehabilitation and reform"" for the south... On a popular level, if a popular audience can be interested.
