Once again Clay Bruckner, the Iron Scout of the Ghost Batallion, pits his wits and his courage against the Yankee forces which threaten to impose Northern will on Southern territory. Once again he serves in the dangerous capacity of a Scout, moving in and out of enemy lines thinking of only two goals; to further the Rebel cause and to meet again with Lark, the Southern girl of whom he is fond. His first wish is denied him at the climax of this book as the white flag of peace is hoisted over the Appomattox Courthouse. But on that day, not only is he reconciled with his sweetheart, he and the Yankee Colonel Tryon, who has been his friendly adversary throughout the war, join in friendly recognition as two soldiers who have manifested bravery and intelligence. Likeable characters, good adventure, and an informative Civil War background mark this last episode in Manly Wade Wellman's Iron- Scout series with interest and readability.
