KIRKUS REVIEW

A summer at Sky Notch, helping Dr. Dinwiddie explore the Mines of the Ancients in North Carolina, offered mystery and excitement to Dave Burnett, who had just finished High School and wished desperately for the means to attend Chapel Hill to study for the teaching profession. Although Dave and the professor meet opposition and hostility from the wily Ward Casto, who knows what treasure is concealed in the nether regions of the mines, they are not deterred by his mountain spells and black magic. Dave's persistence solves the mystery of the strange lights over Skeleton Ridge and earns him a scholarship at Chapel Hill. Superficial but entertaining, in another mystery-adventure yarn from a practised hand.
