Edinburgh's Detective Inspector Jeremy Faro, hero of this Victorian-era series (Deadly Beloved, 1990, etc.), is visiting the island in the Orkneys where he grew up and where his mother is temporary housekeeper at Belfray Castle. Faro's physician stepson Vince is also on the island, in response to the pleas of fellow doctor Francis Belfray, laird of the castle, to help save his dying wife, Thora. Faro arrives in time for her funeral, bringing test equipment that confirms Vince's suspicion that she died of arsenic poisoning. Could the seemingly grief-stricken husband be the culprit--or is it Norma, Thora's sister, who was once engaged to Francis and is now the fiancÉe of the island's new minister, Reverend Erlandson? Finding a solution grows even more urgent after a grotesque second murder--and the possibility of a third in the recent past. The atmosphere is more Gothic than Victorian, rife with island legend and superstition, narrow escapes from death, coincidence, and melodrama--all served up with considerable charm. Fans of the romance genre will love it.
