GEORGE SHANNON: Young Explorer With Lewis and Clark

George Shannon is used as a device for a retelling of the Lewis and Clark story. George Shannon was a 16-year-old Kentucky boy enlisted by Clark for the expedition. The real stars of the story are, as usual, Lewis, Clark and Bird Woman. This is so much the case, that when George Shannon is on stage, it is difficult to remember that he was supposed to be the main hero here. Shannon did little that is memorable on the trip except that he endured and served like a man while still a boy, spending much of his time as an onlooker rather than an instigator of any of the important events that occurred. It is well written, but the main subject plays a very minor role.
