MATHEMATICAL GAMES FOR ONE OR TWO

More useful as a teacher's resource than for independent reading, this introduction to mathematical games could be followed by any child who is old enough to read the directions. The games involve moving numbered cards in prescribed ways to form pyramids (""How many steps did it take you? Can you do it in fewer steps?"") or shifting the cards again within certain conventions to end up with a certain order, or playing similar games with an opponent using checkers, toothpicks, etc. What is offered here is not facts or concepts but practice in a certain way of thinking (as Charosh puts it ""We have learned something about working a problem that has more than one way to begin""), rather like an early elementary WFF 'n Proof. Lois Ehlert's bright, childlike animal drawings add a lively look with no attempt to illustrate the plays.
