Your first garden doesn't have to be outdoors or even in dirt, as Brown shows here. You can sprout beans in a jar, grow cress in a dish, and grow different kinds of cacti in a gravel-filled pot. However, this is no systematic introduction to indoor gardening, but a mixed sampling with directions for growing a wide variety of plants indoors and out. These include a green ""monster"" that will sprout from seeds on a hanging sponge, citrus-fruit trees and pineapple and peanut plants in pots, flowers in sidewalk cracks, herbs on window sills, and pumpkins or cucumbers in a backyard. They're all presented in a picture-book format that makes the projects look like fun, though it could lead to frustration later if some of them don't work out as easily as Brown's breezy invitation seems to promise.
