A folk song from Michigan--five verses enumerating 42 animal names (""Bullfrog, Hog, Dodo, Bat,/Dromedary, Dog, Pelican, Rat,"" etc.)--illustrated individually and cumulatively. The litany of names is catchy; the illustrations in bold black line, with large areas of harmonious springtime colors, are attractively designed and legibile at group distance; and, the animals, many of them clothed for the picnic that provides the book's continuity, are whimsicallly benign. Unfortunately, though, the visual style Sewall has chosen is so unarticulated that many of them look like something else (the heron more like a stork, geese like ducks). Slight.
