Hilton, Georgia, population 70,000, is the scene of a library's battle against civic indifference and the city council's resistance to a bond issue for its new building, and Anne Fuller, the new assistant librarian, finds herself taking a very active part. The Friends of the Library have made possible the bookmobile, the audio visual equipment and publicity, but the handicaps of budget and building and other equipment are not recognized by those who control the finances, the most powerful of whom is William Wyman, the rich uncle of Don Wyman who has become Anne's fiance. Anne's strategy to win over Uncle Bill and the chance to make use of him when the library is in danger pay off. Girlish but library conscious.
