SERVE ME A SLICE OF MOON

These bright, brief, brisk, helter-skelter poems have a fairly irresistible gaiety about them, of the type often called childlike, though it is sometimes the way in which adults write for children. A self-conscious cuteness mars a few of these poems; but at best they fuse a young freshness and energy with wholly adult concepts and perceptions, and, at a brief notelike pace, describe lizards, snow, moons, seeing, minds, numbers, and other real or mental phenomena, in off-beat and surprising ways. It is not poetry for Milton-lovers; but its euphoric whimsy has structure and point and an imagination of its own, besides being fun to read.
