KIRKUS REVIEW

Matto Grosso (Brazil) was the background which spelt life to young Carlos and his transfer to civilization and a school in Italy caused endless homesickness for the jungle. A close friend helped him over the hurdles, but the war -- and a girl -- smashed that, and Paris ""got"" him. He returns to Brazil with some revolutionaries -- after defeat he escapes to his old fazenda and the friends of his past. An odyssey of the contrasts between primitive and civilized life, colorful pictures of the life in Brazil, readable, but overlong. Question wide appeal.
