It seems like the end of the world to Dean Meadows when his plans to begin his freshman year at Fairhaven are cancelled and he and his younger brother, Larry, are shipped off to their uncle's fishing boat on the Washington coast. But in this dramatically strange environment Dean finds what is to be the beginning of his world. Fascinated by the skill and adventure involved in modern, large scale fishing, and mellowed by his misanthropic uncle's inarticulate need of him, Dean grows up and looks confidently toward the time when, having finished college, he will join the men who scientifically plow the sea. Another fairly mechanical story is redeemed here by much interesting detail of the fishing industry and life along the North Western coast.
