Hodges's earthy retelling of a 19th. century British story depicts a murky, marshy, nighttime world. When the Moon is full, her light sends goblins, bog creatures, and other evil things scurrying for cover, where they won't bother the folk who must travel by night. But the Moon becomes curious about the boggy, marshy land and comes to earth to investigate, disguised in a cloak. The evil things trap her as they would any wayfarer and, recognizing their foe, bury her in a dark pool A wise woman and the courageous bog folk set her free. Henterly's paintings have a looseness that works an eerie spell upon the dark settings, gnarled tree roots, and creeping horrors. Readers will be enchanted by their many intricate details and by the quaint, dialectal text of the robustly told tale.
