THE GOLDEN CARAVEL

Miguel de Mendoza, a 15-year old Spanish boy, stows away on the Santa Maria and sails with Christopher Columbus. Adventure, intrigue and mystery fill the pages in what is an exceptionally fine addition to the Catholic Treasury series for young people. While the foreword explains that Miguel's story is fiction, the historical background holds true to the annals of the times. Miss Bemister is a superb story teller and brings to vivid reality the experiences of the long ocean voyage:- the quelling of impending mutiny. The surmounting of navigation problems; the winning over of natives of the New World. (One 11-year old who read the book said it was better than his current favorite literary diet of Science Fiction). So convincingly are Miguel's adventures interwoven with the true story of the discovery of America that most readers will be convinced that he must be true.
