WHEN GOD SAYS ""NO

The autobiography of a woman who has combined her ministry with marriage and motherhood reads smoothly and reaches the reader with personal immediacy engendered from a sharing of experiences. Taking the hurdle of entering the Congregational Church ministry as a woman, she discovered that Faith's Starting Point is when God says ""no""; for her faith was a constantly self questioned and growing thing. Her parental legacy consisted of three phrases -- ""Hold on. Don't run. One step more"".- and they carried her through her three parishes. First there was the Addison St. parish in Chicago, where she started a summer replacement while a theology student and built from a run down church. Then after marriage and motherhood, while her husband was in the Army, she turned to small towns in upper New York, faced gossip and won. Her next parish was Groton and West Groton, Mass., where tradition presented a stern face, and where she is growing with her ministry today. The tasks, troubles and joys of her ministry are shared with us as Mrs. Johnstone tells of parishioners' warmth, humor, and earnestness here; the fact that the book is appearing serially in The Woman's Home Companion should help you gauge the market- a wide one.
