A blithe bluff retailing of a doctor's days, by a man who was to become Alaska's leading doctor and Commissioner of Health. Born in Cuba, orphaned and stranded in New York's Bowery, unofficially adopted by an Iowa farmer from whom he ran away, DeVighna's early days predicted an even more erratic adolescence. This included ho here and there, selling papers, shipping on a gun-running boat, and eventually becoming the protege of a drinking doctor who was an outcast of the profession. He gave Harry the idea of studying medicine, and eventually he graduated and went to Alaska as a pioneer practitioner. Marriage, and the years up there, with their share of strange situations, epidemics, emergencies, as he serviced whites and Eskimos and Indians. Lively in its way, but not for a wide general market.
