Very fine (sour) cream portraiture, mostly from The New Yorker profiles. ighlighting and weak-spotting people of the theatre, producers, playwrights, musicians, actors, agents, song writers, dancers, lawyers, milliners...in candid, but not candied, manner. The list includes such notables as Gilbert Miller, Max Gordon, Claro Boothe, Lillian ellman, elen Kayes, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Leland Hayward, Fanny Holtz, Mary Pickford, the De Maroos, etc. -- from personal interviews, checks and double-cks with relations, friends and enemies, business associates. The best have some degree of felinity: the most interesting are those characters having colorful contradictions and outstanding traits. Not an evaluation, but a double-faced mirroring of prominent characteristics and personalities, amusing, sword-edged.
