The problem of the working wife whose income surpasses that of her husband provides the conflict between Kay Ryland, decorator, and her husband, Steve, who is being mentioned as a gubernatorial possibility. Her income needed when Steve was studying law, starting practice and while he served in World War II, Kay's business has become a full time proposition. But there is always time for Steve and her two boys. So when Steve begins to handle widowed Lisa Bowes' estate Kay is unaware of her adversary's contrasting appeal. Steve, however succumbs, asks for a divorce and Kay stands pat that she will not be the one to get it. This impasse hurts Steve as a choice for governor and is solved when Lisa reveals her not quite so commendable tactics so that Steve wakes to Kay's integrity, importance and desirability.
