PERCEPTUAL GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

An attractive collection of simple games and exercises for improving perception in key curriculum areas, with appropriate grade levels indicated. The mathematics activities include magic squares, playing-card variations, number work, elementary geometry explorations (some highly imaginative), and a unit on metrics; only basic materials--pencil and paper, dice, clocks--are required. The exercises for sharpening verbal skills are also easy to introduce: homophones, homographs, magic spelling squares, rhymes, logic problems, and word puzzles. In addition, a smaller number of activities involving wind-action observation are suggested. Strictly for teachers and other adults working with groups of young children, this is a sizable assemblage of challenging problems suitable for upper elementary and junior high classrooms.
