I KNEW MACBEAN

Detective Inspector Septimus Finch, whose curiosity is insatiable and whose impersonal concern is successful, gets a satisfactory baffler in the case of a girl terrified by a hearse and its driver. They lead him to a house besieged by an old ghost, by the scandal of deaths caused by jewels, and of a strain of madness that threatens all. Able if not always exhilarating.
