ANNIE AND THE WOODEN SKATES by Margaret Friskey

ANNIE AND THE WOODEN SKATES

By

Publisher: Oxford

This has one feather in its cap, -- the first (so far as I know) story about the Robert E. Lee children and the life at Arlington. The story centers around eight year old Annie, middle of the family and sure that she is not so good as her brothers and sisters at anything. But- after a sad start- her first pair of wooden skates helps restore her self-esteem. Nice picture of family life at a period long before the Civil War, plenty of incident and good characterization. I didn't like the pictures by Lucia Patton, but I did like the story.
