See Margaret Otto's other stories (Pumpkin, Ginger and Spice, etc.) for a repetition of style and theme here. At Great Aunt Victoria's house, where things are different, there is a lot of magic- cherries are sweeter, the cat sings and so forth. But when young Edward and Georgiana arrive for a visit, the serious current problem is that Pig, one of the animals, does not feel the magic. In her portrayal of schemes to work a change on Pig, the author creates a special fantasy world in minute detail. But the reactions of its characters are so typed and their actions so inconsequential that they remain a constant chore for this reader. To a fresh young audience however, they may have the appeal of a sugar coated world of pleasant surprises and happy outcomes.
