Pancake Special is a fast flip through U.S. racing circuits, a successor to Backyard Winner (1963) which scraps any moral issues along with characterization and settles for the racing sequences which really spin. Scott Condon, whose parents are remarkably restrained and give him the go-ahead, graduates from stock cars to the real thing and must decide if he really wants to race as a career. The book here follows him from track to track through the preliminary trials, then puts him at the wheel of the Klearoil Special (alias the Pancake Flip) and through the grim initiation of the run in Indianapolis. At the end, he's made up his mind (the Air Force) and so does his gal.... A bucket seat special for this particular spectator-readership.
