BERTOLT BRECHT'S THE GALILEO

These small pamphlet studies form the first of a new ""Religious Dimensions in Literature"" series, edited by Lee A. Belford. The design of the series is to provide brief introductions and commentaries upon recent works of fiction having religious significance for modern man. The general plan begins with a brief biographical account of the author under study followed by a summary of the work itself, sometimes interspersed with commentary, and then a final assessment of the intent of the work in terms of Christian outlook. As might be expected, these first four items are not of uniform quality, but each is a fully informed study, both in terms of related contemporary literature and in terms of religious ideas. The commentary at times takes on a homiletical tone which may lead the reader to conclude he might as well go directly to the piece of fiction under study and draw his own conclusions. But for the most part, the series promises to be a useful introduction to a number of modern pieces of fiction, and attractive to those who enjoy the literary approach to questions of faith.
