KIRKUS REVIEW

This guide to the 135 species known to occur in the area covered is preceded by an introduction which clarifies its arrangement (technical botanical terms and metric measurements used and a description of its nomenclature), a glossary, geographic and general abbreviations, fern cytology, spores, exploring for ferns and ferns in the garden. Then come the keys -- to families, major groups and genera, etc.; to species and individuals within previous groups; to Lycosphens. The descriptions and illustrations, by James C. W. Chen, follow in the order established by the keys. This offers worthwhile study for beginning as well as advanced taxonomists for pronunciation is given together with dimensions, range, habitat and culture in the descriptive sections and the illustrations bring out significant characteristics in aiding identification.
