KIRKUS REVIEW

One of the most delightful books of literary criticism that has come my way for some time. Survey of women novelists, written with charm and originality. She starts with Mary Wellstonecraft -- treats the 19th century group -- then goes on to the moderns whom she divides into seven major groups -- the ""girl pals"", the ""go-getters"", the ""matriarchs"", the ""help-meets"", the ""sophisticates"", the ""priestesses"", the ""artists"". There's challenge in her thesis -- and she makes her development first rate reading. Ideal for club groups, libraries, etc.
