THE BORZOI BOOK OF MODERN DANCE

In contrast to its companion The Borzoi Book of Ballets, by Grace Robert (1946) which used its introduction for the history of the art, this a chronological story of modern dancing in the United States, marking the individual creative contributions of the artists, and presenting a comprehensive survey of the developments, influences, growth and changes in this field. From Duncan, Wigman, St. Denis, Shawn, to Graham, Humphrey and Weidman, on through Tamaris, Holm, and many of the newcomers, this not only gives biographical data, but notes the programs, trends, and accomplishments of these dancers, the groups, movements, schools, aims and meanings of their dance forms. There is a very personal feeling in the writing for the author has followed this medium for years and feels strongly about the creative vitality which has been in evidence, and the minimizing of academic and/or too technical approach gives the book a lively interest. A good reference book on this subject, with a worthwhile bibliography.
